Hever Castle and Gardens

Hever Castle was one of the first properties we worked with in organizing the BSL Interpreted Joust back in 2021! Since then they have trained their staff using our Deaf Awareness Courses, arranged Deaf-led and Interpreted BSL tours and other events.

Harriet Waldron, Visitor Services Learning Manager comments on our work:

"We have been working with Heritage Interpreters for several years now, and it has been a pleasure from Day One. Their expertise, knowledge, passion and kindness makes them an absolute joy to collaborate with, and their continued assistance has been vital in heloing us connect with and better serve the Deaf community."

Here are some highlights from the past few years:

Deaf Awareness Courses

Hever Castle have run a number of Deaf Awareness Courses over the years. Some of their front-of house staff are able to greet their Deaf visitors and give some basic information in sign language. This creates an all inclusive environment at Hever Castle and Gardens.

British Sign Language Interpreted Tours and Events

We have assisted the Hever Castle team to organize, promote and interpret a number of events at the Castle and the Castle grounds. One year the BSL Interpreted joust hosted over 40 Deaf people.

Deaf-Led Tours

During 2025 we assisted the Hever team in curating a Deaf-led tour of the Castle. Deaf visitors were taught the fascinating history and stories from within the walls of the Castle by qualified Deaf Tour guide, John Wilson.

Marketing and Media

During 2025 we produced a short British Sign Language Video advert to market the tours and events arranged for Deaf people at Hever Castle. This was promoted through our Deaf social media channels and at our exhibit at City Lit's Deaf Day.
